Stem Cell Glossary
- Adult stem cells - Rare cells that can be found in some organs and tissues including the placenta and umbilical cord.
- Cord blood banking - When blood is obtained from the placenta and umbilical following the birth of a baby then frozen and stored for the possibility of using the stem cells at a later time.
- Cord blood stem cells - A source of a few types of limited (adult) stem cells.
- Embryonic stem cells - Cells that can be changed and manipulated to form other cells.
- Limited stem cells - same as adult stem cells.
- Placental stem cells - same as cord blood stem cells.
- Reproductive cloning - The creation of an embryo with the aim of creating a new individual of the species.
- Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) - Uses an unfertilized egg and adult cell to create an embryonic cell.
- Stem cells - A 'starter' cell that has the ability to grow into adult tissue.
- Stem cell harvesting - same as cord blood banking.
- Stem cell therapy - The process of injecting stem cells into a person or organism to repair specific tissues or to grow organs.
- Therapeutic cloning - same as somatic cell nuclear transfer.
- Unlimited stem cells - same as embryonic stem cells.
