Stem Cell Havesting: For information on stem cell research, technology and cord blood banking.

Stem Cell Glossary

  • Adult stem cells - Rare cells that can be found in some organs and tissues including the placenta and umbilical cord.

  • Cord blood banking - When blood is obtained from the placenta and umbilical following the birth of a baby then frozen and stored for the possibility of using the stem cells at a later time.

  • Cord blood stem cells - A source of a few types of limited (adult) stem cells.

  • Embryonic stem cells - Cells that can be changed and manipulated to form other cells.

  • Limited stem cells - same as adult stem cells.

  • Placental stem cells - same as cord blood stem cells.

  • Reproductive cloning - The creation of an embryo with the aim of creating a new individual of the species.

  • Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) - Uses an unfertilized egg and adult cell to create an embryonic cell.

  • Stem cells - A 'starter' cell that has the ability to grow into adult tissue.

  • Stem cell harvesting - same as cord blood banking.

  • Stem cell therapy - The process of injecting stem cells into a person or organism to repair specific tissues or to grow organs.

  • Therapeutic cloning - same as somatic cell nuclear transfer.

  • Unlimited stem cells - same as embryonic stem cells.
